The following letter could have been the beginnings of The Bachelor:

Sunday, November 6

Dear Bob,

… We gathered from [a] few of your phrases in your book that you have gained the friendship of that beautiful and glamourous Paulette Goddard. Now we wish to ask a favor of you and hope that you will help us out…. how about arranging a date for each of us, when we get back to the good old U.S.A., with Paulette Goddard?

… Last but not least, how about a picture of yourself? For we have a hole in our tent and finally decided it needed patching and knew that a picture of you would scare anything away, even rain.

“I said (to the pilot), ‘It’s a little rough out there. Don’t you think we should have parachutes?’ He said, ‘Don’t be silly. The ones with parachutes jumped out an hour ago.’”

Subject: Bill for gas

Welcome to our island! May you take all the advantages of our gracious hospitality.

The gasoline that has been “dumped” into your plane, is the finest for we received it from Jack Benny … we believe that Jack Benny’s gas is the best that could be had, for he used it many times, over and over again, with much success and we imagine that it can still be used.

Please sign here in acknowledgment of receiving the gasoline.

By order of Pvt. Guy Ruocco
